Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
