Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
